Ingrowing Toenail Treatment

Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA)

An ingrowing toenail occurs when the nail edge grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, inflammation and often infection. Natalie performs Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA) — a minor surgical procedure in which the problematic edge of the nail is carefully removed under local anaesthetic.

In most cases, a chemical treatment (phenol) is applied to the nail root to prevent that section of nail from regrowing, providing a permanent solution.

Frequently asked questions

If phenol is applied to the nail root, that section will not regrow — providing a permanent solution. Without phenol, the nail edge will grow back, though the procedure still provides temporary relief.
Allow around 1–1.5 hours for your full appointment including assessment, anaesthesia and dressing.
Recovery is generally smooth and complete within six weeks, and with most patients much sooner. You can walk immediately after the procedure. Rest and elevate the foot for the first 24–48 hours where possible.
Once numb, you will feel no pain during the procedure — only occasional pressure.
